Review: Lester & Joyce B.

Had a wonderful time and the weather was great. The hotel is really changing. They are upgrading to a 5 star and it is showing. We had a beautiful room with a king size canopy bed with gauze side curtains and a huge Jacuzzi tub. A beautiful patio and just steps from the beach. Our flights were great and right on time. I sure hope they don’t raise the price too much. They also gave us a T-shirt with “Welcome Back” written on it and in spanish “Me casa is you casa”. We even had 24 hour room service included and also a mini bar in the room stocked daily with no charge for that either. We also had great big terry bath robes and a huge bathroom. What a great time. You could notice a better set of people and the service was beyond compare.

Had a wonderful time. Great place to spend a few days. The Resort is beautiful. It takes about an hour from the airport to get to El Dorado. Good roads and they drive on the right side like the US.

RESTAURANTS take little packets of salt in a zip lock bag. With so much humidity the salt shakers don’t work well, if at all.  Otherwise the food is delicious and well prepared. Service may be somewhat slow but heck it’s Mexico and where else will you go at 7pm there. Book your appointment early at the Italian and Mexican restaurants. We were there three days and didn’t get into the Italian. The International is usually available. We loved eating on the patio under the palm trees. Yes, there are cats around, just don’t feed them and they won’t bother you. Once you start…. There are also Peacocks around and they will eat out of your hand.

ENTERTAINMENT - The nightly games/entertainment don’t start until 9:30pm. We did not participate in any of the day activities so I can’t comment on them. The live band there was very good. They played and sang some very good Mambo’s and a few Rumba’s and even a fast Swing. We are social ballroom dancers and got in several dances.

BEACH You do need water shoes if you want to wade out very far, but once I got the feel of the resort, I went bare foot all the time. Just watch where you are going. Snorkeling is good, but shallow. The beach at the south end of the resort is nice with plenty of sand and shade. The North end isn’t as nice and they have a wall at the edge of the water so you can’t watch the water from your beach chair. I never saw anyone lying in that area except near the lap pool. The beach beds are great; just don’t hog them all day unless you use them. If you leave for very long let someone else use it.

ROOMS Very nice, we had a Jr. Jacuzzi Suite on the ground floor. An upper floor might have been nicer with a better view of the water. The upper floor Jacuzzi is outside on the deck. Lower rooms had the Jacuzzi inside but you can walk out the back door and go (if you do you have to leave the room unlocked)  Air-conditioner worked great with remote control of the temperature. Nice. Water was hot and plentiful, no problem anytime. I had read reports of very hard beds. We had a King size and it was harder than we were use too, but not as hard as some folks seem to imply. It didn’t seem to bother us, we slept very well.

RESORT The resort is in the process of being upgraded. Workers were working on several of the units and grounds. I didn’t find out when it was expected to be completed.  So the resort was not sold out. I never asked but I suspect that it may have been less than half full.

EXCURSIONS  My wife went to Playa Del Carmen one day. I stayed and crashed on the beach. We had planned to go to X-caret (Ish-carret) or Tulum, but didn’t make it. There is always next year. We also took a day pass to the Hidden Beach au-natural resort next door. They were very nice and explained the situation and rules very well. My wife was concerned that she had to be nude all the time but that’s not the case and she covered up for lunch as did most women.

TRAVEL PLANNING - We used GoAwayTravel.com for our travel planning. They were very good, and patient with all my changes and questions, and I had lots. Kristy answered all questions and made all changes I requested by return email. I never had to question if they were doing anything or not. I talked to her by phone a couple of times and never had to wait for her or have her return my call. We will use them again in the future. When Kristy was gone for a few days, I was picked up immediately by Suzy who acted like she had taken care of me all along.

Would we return? Yes, in a heart beat. Maybe not for 8 days, it might get repetitive unless you go on lots of excursions. We will try for X-caret next year. El Dorado is worth the trip.
